On board

Sir Thomas Sopwith is a remarkable 72-foot classic sailing yacht with more than half a century of maritime history — from British sail training and innovative yacht construction to major Australian offshore voyages and, today, luxury private charter on Sydney Harbour.

Built in Falmouth, England in 1974, she was designed by renowned British naval architect Robert Clark for the Ocean Youth Club, one of Britain's leading offshore sail-training organisations. The yacht was named in honour of her sponsor Sir Thomas Sopwith — celebrated British aviation figure, industrialist, accomplished yachtsman and two-time America's Cup challenger.

Main saloon

At a time when large sailing yachts were still predominantly built in timber or metal, she was constructed in fibreglass, described by the Ocean Youth Club as the longest production fibreglass sailing vessel in the world at the time. More than 50 years later, her elegant Robert Clark lines remain unmistakable.

Her career included extensive offshore sailing and several Atlantic crossings before an equally fascinating Australian chapter, including connections with the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, extensive cruising of the Australian coastline and a Round Australia voyage.
